GWS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Black Feminist Thought4 credits (Spring) This course is a study of the major contributions of Black feminist thinkers in the first, second, and third waves of the feminist movement in the United States. In addition to reading foundational texts in Black Women’s Studies by authors such as Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Anna Julia Cooper, Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, bell hooks, Angela Y. Davis, Patricia Hill Collins and Beverly Guy-Sheftall, class participants will consider more recent work by Black feminist thinkers, such as Rebecca Walker, Mark Anthony Neal, Imani Perry and Sharon Patricia Holland. Students will gain an understanding of this work within the context of a rich history of Black women’s activism in various movements for social justice and equality.
