SOC 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Culture4 credits (Fall) Culture, in the field of sociology, “considers material products, ideas, and symbolic means and their relation to social behavior” (American Sociological Association). This course will cover a few narrow areas in depth, to give students basic theoretical competency and a sense of what cultural sociologists/sociologists of culture do. Topics to include: microsociology and macrosociology of culture; cultural consumption and reception; mass culture, subcultures and resistance; political culture; language as culture; and classification, boundaries and cognition.
Prerequisite: SOC 111 and one 200-level sociology course. Instructor: Devine-Eller
