PHI 268 - Cultural Critique: Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, and Beyond4 credits (Fall) Students begin by examining several key texts of the 19th century by Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud that lay the groundwork for the “Critique of Ideology” that has evolved in the 20th century into the interdisciplinary field of “Cultural Critique.” Focusing on thinkers who have fused the critical perspectives of Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, students explore the works of the Frankfurt School (Adorno, Marcuse, Benjamin), structuralism (Althusser, Bataille), and poststructuralism (Foucault, Deleuze, Agamben, Butler).
Prerequisite: PHI 111 ; and one 200-level course in Philosophy, Political Science, or History. Note: Not offered every year.
