GDS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Development Dilemmas in sub-Saharan Africa: Policies, Institutions, and Actors4 credits (Fall) This course will investigate development in sub-Saharan Africa as a process of social and political change. It will include an overview of development policy in Africa in historic perspective (colonial, state-led, post-structural adjustment) and engagement with contemporary challenges facing the continent such as food security, civil conflict, and urbanization. It will examine these challenges, past development failures, and perceived ways forward through several different theoretical frameworks with particular attention to issues of governance.
Prerequisite: GDS 111 and ECN 230 , GDS 261 , HIS 262 , POL 250 , POL 251 , POL 257 , POL 258 , or POL 262 , OR another 200-level course approved by the instructor. Instructor: Brottem
