ARH 295-02 - Special Topic: Collecting the “Orient”

4 credits (Spring)
The United States and Europe are home to world-class collections of Asian art, from murals and architectural elements to sculptures, ceramics, paintings, and textiles. This class examines the origins of such Asian art collections, beginning in the nineteenth century and continuing through the present day. We will explore the changing practices of archaeological excavations, the antiquities market, and looting, as well as consider the ways, licit and illicit, that these collections were built.
