RES 295-02 - Special Topic: Comparing Genocides

2 credits (Spring)
Genocide has been the hallmark of the 20th century. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a throwback toward mediaeval barbarism, but an unwanted byproduct of the Enlightenment. Epitomized by the Shoah, which remains unprecedented, it has also manifested itself before and after WWII, with certain core elements repeating themselves. Reaction to the Shoah has enabled branding genocide an international crime - and has thus made having one’s suffering called genocide a desirable political goal. The international community has failed to live up to the slogan of “never again”, so genocide remains. Awareness of its dynamic might help prevent it.
