ENG 310-01 - Studies in Shakespeare4 credits (Fall) Mapping the Absent in Shakespeare’s Plays. This course will intensively study four of Shakespeare’s plays: Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, Coriolanus, and A Winter’s Tale. In order to understand the resonances of these texts in Shakespeare’s time and in their afterlives, we will trace their sources, contemporaneous influences, and their adaptations in recent film and televison. Our particular focus will be on what is absent on the Renaissance stage and in later adaptations. In turn, mapping these unseen elements will help us better understand how Shakespeare meditates on an increasingly globalizing world. Students without the prerequisites may enroll in the class with the permission of the instructor.
Prerequisite: ENG 121 . ENG 223 and ENG 224 strongly recommended. Instructor: Garrison
