SOC 295-02 - Special Topic: Afrofuturist Sociology: Race and Technology4 credits (Spring) In this course we will use Afrofuturism as a conceptual framework for investigating the social construction of race and technology through a wide range of topics, including: freedom, slavery and emancipation, Civil Rights, pan-Africanism, theories of modernity, postmodernity, and technoculture, the Cold War and postcolonialism, cyborgs and posthumanism, as well as connections to speculative thought in literature, music, and film, sociology, and philosophy. Although race is the primary lens through which we will study technology and socio-technological change, we will also consider the impact of gender, sexuality, social class, and ability as they relate to communities of color and the deep technological embeddedness of everyday life.
Prerequisite: SOC 111 . Instructor: Crombez
