POL 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: International Politics of Organized Crime4 credits (Spring) Organized crime and extra-legal non-state armed groups have established themselves as important political actors in every region of the world. These organizations, however, are not new and, over time, have manifested themselves in numerous different forms as bandits, pirates, vigilante organizations, militias, drug trafficking cartels, street gangs, mafias, prison gangs, and smuggling networks, among others. This course will examine organized crime’s origins and goals, how these organizations are structured, and their relationship with each other and with the state.
Prerequisite: POL 250 , POL 251 , POL 255 , POL 257 , POL 258 , POL 259 , POL 261 , POL 262 , POL 273 , POL 295 Politics of South Asia, or POL 295 Gender in Developing Countries. Instructor: Barnes
