ANT 295-01 - Special Topic: Politics of the Past: Archaeology and Museums4 credits (Spring) This course investigates the politics of the past by examining how archaeological sites, museum objects, and cultural property are caught up in debates regarding heritage rights, nationalism, and memorialization. Students will discuss the roles and responsibilities of archaeologists and museum professionals in these controversies and present on recent case studies such as the removal of confederate statues, repatriation of sacred Indigenous objects, and auctioning of World War II Japanese American incarceration camp artifacts. This fulfills the Archeology subfield requirement.
