MUS 101-14 - Chamber Ensembles

Chamber Ensembles at Grinnell College make in-depth explorations of music composed for small groups. Many of the great composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak and Shostakovic, have written some of their best compositions for small ensembles. String quartets and piano trios form the core of the repertoire, but there are many wonderful combinations of strings, piano and woodwinds also. Each player has an individual part, learns to be musically independent, while also being sensitive to the others in the group. Once-a-week coachings are supplemented by student-run rehearsals, and culminate in two or more performances each semester. Visiting artists, such as Pacifica, Brentano, American and St. Lawrence string quartets, give outstanding master classes

Prerequisite: Ability to read music notation. Audition required.
