ENG 226-01 - Tradition of English Literature III (Fall)4 credits (Fall) Ends of Empire: The Literature of Britain and Ireland from 1900 to Present. This course takes its readings mainly from three areas: the major authors of British and Irish Modernism (Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, and James Joyce); the tradition of Irish drama in writers such as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, and Martin McDonagh; and a diverse selection of contemporary British writers such as Jeanette Winterson, Hanif Kureishi, and Zadie Smith. Class discussions will engage a wide range of topics, from matters of literary technique and style to issues of race, sexuality, and postcolonial studies.
Prerequisite: ENG 120 orENG 121 for majors; for non-majors, ENG 120 or ENG 121 or any course in the study of literature in another language department. Instructor: Simpson
