  • SST 295-04 - Special Topic: Preparing for Off-Campus Study as an Ethnographic Encounter: Studying Cultural Phenomena While Off-Campus

    2 credits (Spring)
    This short course is designed for students going on off-campus study in Fall 2016 who are especially interested in preparing to understand cultural phenomena. The instructor, an anthropologist who serves as Assistant Director of Off-Campus Study, will introduce students to the basics of ethnographic research methods as planning and training for engaging with and interpreting cross-cultural difference. Some of the issues covered in the course include: exploring the complexity of interpersonal encounters with cultural difference; preparing to interact with local professionals and experts; interviewing people; experimenting with different styles of documenting one’s experience; and considering the ethical management of knowledge gained from local sources.

    Prerequisite: Second-year standing.
