ENG 120-05 - Literary Analysis (Fall)4 credits (Fall) In this section of Literary Analysis, you will develop the tools required to read and critique poetry and prose written in English. Besides mastering the basics of the “close reading,” you will analyze texts through the lens of critical theory to develop a rich and nuanced vocabulary for discussing literature. We will explore the notion of canon formation and consider how African American writers “signify” upon “master narratives.” Specifically, we will read works by Wanda Coleman, George C. Wolfe, Octavia Butler, and Kyle Baker-to name a few-to understand how race and gender impact black texts, if they impact them at all.
Prerequisite: None. Instructor: Benjamin
