HIS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Historical Narratives in the Middle East

Historical Narratives in the Middle East. This course explores the relationship between history writing and community in the Middle East. We will read classic texts by Muslim scholars in which God is an actor in human history, analyze the role that myths of origin played in Muslim empires, and discuss the modern transformation of historiographic traditions in the Middle East. Of particular interest will be the relationship between history writing and modern nationalism and the role of historiography in Israel/Palestine. 

Prerequisite: REL 220 , HIS 266 , HIS 267 , or REL 267 .
Note: Does not fulfill the seminar requirement for the History major.
