ENG 295-01 - Special Topic: Slavery and Human Rights in the Atlantic World (1630-1830)4 credits (Spring) This course will examine fictional, commercial, political, autobiographical, and philosophical representations of slavery and emerging discourses of human rights throughout the Atlantic world from 1630-1830. The texts will be drawn from authors writing in English from throughout North and South America, West Africa, and the British Isles. Students will write two shorter (5-6 page) papers and one longer (14-15 page) research project, and will give a significant presentation to the class based on historical research.
Prerequisite: ENG 224 , ENG 227 , or ENG 229 . Instructor: Shanafelt
