CHI 195-01 - Introductory Special Topic: Word and Image: Poetry and Painting in Early to Middle Period China4 credits (Spring) Cross-listed as: EAS 195-01 . This class introduces the dynamic interaction between word and image in Chinese poetry and painting from early times until the Song dynasty (960-1279), the Renaissance period of Chinese history which saw the rise of landscape painting and the literati class. Issues this class will explore include: theories and practices that relate these two “sister” arts, the ways landscape painting encoded and debated social values, and how Chinese women were represented in these two forms.
