GDS 295-01 - Special Topic: Environmental Challenges, NGOs and Collaborators

Cross-listed as: ENV 295-01 . Dr Mary Seely from the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, a Namibian NGO (nongovernmental organization), will offer this course. Students will explore how NGOs can contribute to enhanced livelihoods and environmental sustainability by actively engaging with a case study that affects 20% of Namibians and key drivers of the country’s economic sector. Readings include online reports, plans and policies relating to the case study and must be completed by the class start date. Class exercises will involve role playing to formulate a problem tree and complete a stakeholder analysis, followed by an assessment of the interests represented by the stakeholder groups. The final product of the course will be an action plan and associated proposal written by all stakeholders working as a team.

Prerequisite: A 200-level course from one of the following departments - Anthropology, Biology, Economics, Political Science, or Sociology.
