EDU 295-01 - Special Topic: Education Reform: Rhee to Ravitch

4 credits (Spring)
Chief advocate of education reform, Michelle Rhee, proposes accountability, merit pay, and market-based approaches as solutions to the failure of public education. The opposition to reformer discourse and policy, led by spokesperson Diane Ravitch, decries reformers’ corporate connections. We will investigate the historical context, political origins, and implications of this debate with analysis of No Child Left Behind, charter schools, Teach for America, and Common Core through case studies that include Chicago, New York City, and New Orleans.

Prerequisite: EDU 101 .
