CLS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Troy Story: The Trojan Legend in Classical and Medieval Literature

4 credits (Spring)
Cross-listed as: ENG 395-01  or HUM 395-01 . We will examine the development of the Trojan legend in the classical and medieval traditions. First we will study Homer’s Illiad, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Ovid’s Heroides, a collection of letters between famous literary characters, such as Helen and Paris. Then we will focus on the love story of Troilus and Cressida as it is re-imagined throughout the Middle Ages by Boccaccio and Chaucer. We will conclude with Shakespeare’s play Troilus and Cressida, a bizarre and chaotic synthesis of the classical and medieval traditions.

Prerequisite: One of the following: HUM 101 , HUM 102 ENG 223 , ENG-295-The Arthurian Legend (Grinnell-in-London), LAT 323 LAT 395-01  , GRE 301 , or CLS 242 .
Note: Plus-2 option available.
