ANT 295-03 - Special Topic: Nature and Culture on the American Prairie

4 credits (Fall)
Grinnell lies at the center of what was once the tallgrass prairie of North America, a region that has witnessed profound sociocultural and ecological changes in the last 200 years.  We will examine indigenous peoples’ adaptations to the prairie, destruction of the prairie by European settlers, replacement of agrarian by industrial agriculture, decline of small towns, new ethnicities, social problems and efforts at renewal, and commentaries provided through the arts. Field trips.

Prerequisite: ANT 104 .
