REL 295-03 - Special Topic: Yoga and Meditation: From India to the West4 credits (Spring) In the West today, yoga usually refers to a system of bodily postures, while meditation is often understood as a stress-management tool. However, mastery of one’s body and mind constitutes only one aspect of much broader practice systems and worldviews that have developed into distinct traditions. We will survey these traditions and explore how these disciplines have changed through their encounter with Western culture first in colonial India and then in the contemporary world.
Prerequisite: REL 101 , REL 102 , REL 103 , REL 104 , REL 105 , or second-year standing. Instructor: Ferrario
