EDU 295-01 - Special Topic: Literacy and Liberation: A Survey of Free Black Women

4 credits (Spring)

This course considers the ways in which Black women and girls have co-constructed, performed, and redefined literacy as a means for liberation. Because liberation can embody both physical and mental freedom, the course will focus on the development of Black women’s literacies and its response to intersectional systems of oppression. There is a travel excursion over Spring break to spend 5 days total in Dorchester, Maryland and Syracuse, New York. The Harriet Tubman Byway, Syracuse University, and Harriet Tubman’s home will offer a number of opportunities to meet with organizations focused on Black women’s health and wellness.

This course includes required travel. Students will be required to pay a $250 participation fee (most other required travel expenses will be  covered). This fee will be added to the student  tuition bill and is due by the first day of  classes. If payment of this fee causes you financial concern, please contact Gretchen Zimmermann in the Financial Aid Office to discuss loan options to cover this additional cost for attendance.

Prerequisite: Second-year standing.
Instructor: S. Jones
