ENG 120-01 & 04 - Introduction to Literary Analysis4 credits (Fall) This course will examine the ways that we create, police and break the bonds of citizenship. Questions to consider are: “Who decides the boundaries of citizenship? How and why are some people left out of the social contract? What do we owe each other as fellow citizens? We will use the poems of Claudia Rankine, Emma Lazarus and Langston Hughes, the short stories of Shirley Jackson, N.K. Jemisin and Ursula Le Guin as well Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel, The Namesake to develop our skills regarding literary analysis and the formulation of arguments (literary and otherwise).
