SOC 395-03 - Advanced Special Topic: Raising the Race

4 credits (Spring)
What does it mean to be a good mother? This course will deconstruct the contemporary social construct of American motherhood by “shifting the center” of family and motherhood scholarship away from white, middle-class heterosexual families. Rather, we will highlight how mothers of colors often raise the race through strategic decision-making to ensure their children’s-and their broader racial and ethnic communities-survival amidst interlocking structures of racial domination, economic exploitation, and patriarchy.

Prerequisite: One 200-level sociology course.
Instructor: Etienne
