THD 195-02 - Introductory Special Topic: Stage and Production Management for Production

4 credits (Spring)

This course is an exploration of theory and methodology utilized to produce and manage creative work in the performing arts and the application of that theory in experiential production laboratories. In the first half of the course, students will build skills in communication, relationship building, and leadership imperative in collaborative performance-making and examine the daily responsibilities inherent in balancing the needs of a production, director’s vision, technical crews, theatre staff, design team, as well as how to maintain the wellness of performers and crew members during the production process. In the second half of the course,  students will further their examination of the history and techniques of production management, researching different case studies from multiple production genres,  including theatre, dance, touring production, trade shows, and opera to understand the role of production management in both non-profit and commercial arts organizations.

Lastly, students will apply the theory and techniques from the course in production laboratories throughout the term. The course time is intentional to overlap with Theatre and Dance mainstage production rehearsals, allowing for students to take artistic responsibility for a running production project.
