SPN 320-01 - Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World4 credits (Fall Term 2) Historical Memory and Cultural Production in 20th Century Spain. In this class, we will examine the influence that contemporary cultural products such as television programs, film, music and other visual texts have on the historical memory of the early 20th century. Using these texts, we will critique these representations alongside historical events such as the Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship, and the transition to democracy. We will also examine how memories can be created, manipulated, and destroyed through the production and consumption of genres such as cinema and television. A Netflix subscription will be required for this course.
Prerequisite: SPN 285 . Note: Plus-2 option available. Instructor: Phillips
