ENG 195-01 - Introductory Special Topic: Shakespeare Behind Bars4 credits (Spring) This course will examine Shakespeare’s relationship to prisons, both in his own time and in our own. We will begin by considering the playwright’s depictions of imprisonment before exploring the role of his work in contemporary prison literacy and performance programs. Looking at case studies from around the globe, we will explore complex questions about how literature might play a role in enriching the lives of incarcerated individuals and other vulnerable communities.
