ANT 233 - Anthropology of Borderlands

4 credits (Fall or Spring)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the anthropological study of borders and borderlands. Drawing from interdisciplinary and cross-cultural source material, we will examine the sociocultural, political, and historical construction of borders and borderlands. Among the topics addressed in this course are: nation-building processes, border enforcement, human rights, symbolic borders, how people and ideas travel across borders. In addition, we will focus on the ways in which borders and borderlands are used in identity creation and contestation processes.

Prerequisite: ANT 104  with grade S, C, or better.
