CHI 195-01 - Introductory Special Topic: A Comparative Introduction to East Asian Animation: Technology, Style and Aesthetics

Cross-listed as: EAS 195-01 .  This course offers a comparative introduction to the major techniques, films, directors, and movements in motion picture animation in East Asia from the 1920s to the present, with an emphasis on the narrative and representational strategies in Greater China and Japan and how animated films from analog to digital have contributed to the formations of national styles and cultural histories and become an integral part of everyday life. Frequent references to the Euro-American animations and studios that serve as stylistic and industrial foundations will also be made. This course covers various forms of animation such as cel, puppet, papercutting, and computer animations, and pays close attention to technological and aesthetic developments by looking at some of the most critically essential works in East Asia.
