CLS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: The Classical Athenian Acropolis and Its Afterlives

4 credits (Spring)
Cross-listed as: ARH 395-01 .  This course examines the architecture and sculpture of the classical Athenian Acropolis-their chronology, function, and style. It traces the successive afterlives of the buildings as they were modified by Romans, Christians, Ottoman Turks, European visitors, and, finally, modern Greeks as they fought for independence in the 19th century. We will also consider what the Acropolis means to Greeks today as they struggle to conserve the buildings and to regain ownership of its sculptures.
