THD 195-06 - Introductory Special Topic: BIPOC TV: Critical Media and Performance Studies2 credits (Spring) This short course applies performance studies and media studies perspectives to the recent increase in BIPOC representation on both sides of the television cameras. Examining shows like Reservation Dogs, with its first ever all-Native writers’ room and roots in live comedy, to Queen Sugar’s showcase of Black women directors, to the speculative fictions of Watchmen and Lovecraft Country, to reboots like One Day at a Time, we’ll look at formal choices and content. Discussion will be augmented by short reflective/critical responses and opportunities to create audio and video essays. Prerequisite: None.
