ANT 238 - Environmental Anthropology4 credits (Fall or Spring) Reviews various cultural anthropology approaches to understanding human/environment interactions through ethnographic case studies of small-scale societies from distinct environmental regions. How do “extreme” environments affect human adaption? How are cultures shaped by their efforts to acquire food and by their conceptualizations of the natural environment? How are small-scale cultures and their environments affected by increasing integration into the world system (e.g., through globalization).
Prerequisite: ANT 104 or GDS 111 with grades S, C, or better. Note: Not offered every year. Instructor: Roper
