REL 229 - Violence and Nonviolence4 credits (Fall or Spring) This course examines the often surprising intersections between violence and nonviolence religious traditions and the lives of leaders such as Gandhi, MLK and Malcolm X. We will focus on Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism as we engage critical contemporary theories of violence, nonviolence and social change. Together we will debate questions of terrorism, anticolonial and anti-racist revolution, militant nonviolence and the embodied practice of conflict transformation.
