MAT 195-01 - Introductory Special Topic: Introduction to Mathematical Practice

4 credits (Fall)
Mathematics is a fundamental tool for modeling real-world problems, from population dynamics to the spread of disease, from financial models of markets to understanding poll results. These models rely on some core mathematical ideas – we visualize data with graphs and approximate data with functions, and then solve problems with careful mathematical reasoning. Students in this class will develop skills with interpreting real world problems as mathematical statements, solving these problems, and then interpreting the solutions. The course emphasizes mathematical reasoning, conceptual understanding, and logic.

Prerequisite: None.
