CLS 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Emotions of the Greeks

4 credits (Fall)
This course examines emotions and, in particular, how emotions were expressed, perceived, felt, controlled, and understood by the ancient Greeks. As we consider how and why emotions differ across cultures and across time, we will read a range of ancient sources (especially poetry, philosophy, medical treatises, and texts related to politics and the law), and we will survey modern scholarly approaches to emotions, with an emphasis on humanistic perspectives and selected readings of scientific perspectives.
