SOC 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Real Utopias4 credits (Fall) This class begins with the late Marxist sociologist Erik Olin Wright’s concept of “real utopias” – how do people imagine futures that support human flourishing while creating practical alternatives in the present? Topics will include inequalities, ideology, social movement strategy and tactics, identity politics, and the intersection of race, class, and gender. Throughout the course we will wrestle with practical questions around social change while studying real utopian projects in many times and places.
Prerequisite: SOC 111 and two 200-level sociology courses, with grades S, C, or better. Instructor: Haenfler
