JPN 195-01 - Introductory Special Topic: Transnational Literature and Film in Japan4 credits (Fall) Cross-listed as: EAS 195-01 . This course examines modern Japanese literature and film, with a focus on transnational and cultural diversity in Japanese society. In the first half of this course, we will consider literary and cinematic representations of continuous negotiations between tradition and progress, gender and identity, as well as everyday life and postwar traumas in Japan. In the second half, we will investigate transnational production and consumption of Japanese culture by analyzing Japanese literary texts and movies by border-crossing writers. In doing so, we will explore Japan not as a homogeneous, but as a multicultural, transnational society. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required. All assigned readings will be available in English translation.
Prerequisite: None. Instructor: Seong
