REL 295-03 - Special Topic: Gender in the Indian Subcontinent2 credits (Spring) Cross-listed as: HIS 295-03 . The course covers from the late 18th century through 1980s. It explores gender in colonial and post- colonial India, Pakistan and Bangladesh around four themes. First, pre- modern religious traditions which regulated gender norms, and colonial negotiations with them : contrasting that with the contemporary British situation. Then, diverse twentieth-century political movements which refashioned men and women. Next, a comparison of gender practices among the three new nation states. Finally, cultural representations of gender changes.
Prerequisite: Second year standing or above, or 100 level Religion or History course with grade S, C, or better. Instructor: Staff
