SOC 295-01 - Special Topic: Digital Resistance: The #BlackLivesMatter Movement and Modern Social Activism4 credits (Spring) This course examines the intersection of social media and social movements with a particular focus on #BlackLivesMatter (BLM) activism. Students will explore how BLM and other movements mobilize for social justice, focusing on the intersections of race, gender, and class, and how digital platforms like social media shape modern activism. Through a combination of theory, qualitative interviews, and social media data analysis, the course will provide a critical understanding of the dynamics of collective action, resistance, and solidarity in the digital age. Additionally, students will interrogate their own positionality as researchers and activists, while gaining practical experience in conducting qualitative social movements research.
