MUS 202-01 - Topics in American Music: Queer Pop!

4 credits (Spring)
Queer orientations in popular music can work to form bonds based on similar lived experiences, while reaching audiences outside of the LGBTQIA+ community. But what makes queer music special, and how is queer music interacting with its intended (and unintended) audiences? This course uses queer pop, broadly defined, as a site for examining issues of community, chosen family, queer joy, desire, and music reception in various contexts to better understand the music and the people who love it. From everything from Lil Nas X, to drag queens and kings, to Chappell Roan, this course teaches the tools to engage with and analyze this music through various lenses while maintaining the joy found within it.

Prerequisite: None.
Note: Plus-2 option available.
