REL 295-02 - Special Topic: Islam and Modernity4 credits (Fall) Cross-listed as: HIS 295-02 . This course examines the relationship between traditions of Islam and traditions of modernity, first by investigating the nature of “traditions” and then by seeking to understand how debates at the heart of modernity - including those surrounding secularism and capitalism - take shape over time in Muslim communities. We will give special attention to the effects of colonialism and imperialism in the Middle East and South Asia, particularly regarding the relationship between religion and public life.
