HIS 100-02 - Making History (Spring)4 credits (Spring) Dakota-U.S. War of 1862. This course provides an introduction to issues of historical causation, argumentation, and evidence, through an examination of one historical event: the 1862 war between Dakota Indians and Anglo-American settlers in Minnesota. Students will reconstruct what happened, why it happened, and what the uprising meant to settlers, Dakota Indians and other American Indians in the region. Using primary and secondary sources, students will learn the skills necessary to analyze historical scholarship and be introduced to the various means by which historians conduct research and write about the past.
