REL 295-03 - Special Topic: Yoga, East and West

4 credits (Spring)
This course examines the complex Indian religious roots, global networks, and recent controversies behind and surrounding the rise of yoga in the West. While exploring ancient Sanskrit texts, Gandhi’s anti-colonial yoga, and the recent Hindu “Take Back Yoga” campaign, students will debate questions of yoga’s ownership, authenticity and history. The course argues that the spirituality, markets and politics of yoga can teach us much about the meaning and making of religion.
