SPN 320-01 - Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World4 credits (Spring) “Staging Raza”. This course examines the nuances of race in theater from the Spanish-speaking world. We will trace an intellectual history of race as a concept, from Cervantes’s ridicule of the fixation on so-called “blood purity” in El retablo de las maravillas to the teatro campesino’s representation of Chicano pride in being “Raza.” Simultaneously, we will hone students’ oral fluency and understanding of theater through improvisation exercises, table reads, and rehearsal and performance of scenes and monologues. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPN 285 . Note: Plus-2 option available. Instructor: Nunez
