MAT 322-01 - Advanced Topics in Algebra4 credits (Spring) Representation Theory. The mathematical study of groups can be quite challenging. One way to gain insight about a group is looking at the group’s actions-to view the group as the symmetries (permutations) of a set. We can learn more still by adding further structure and looking at the group’s linear representations-viewing the group as the symmetries of a vector space. Doing so allows us to associate groups with matrices and use the tools of linear algebra to understand the groups better. There will be a research component in this course.
Prerequisite: MAT 321 , with grade S, C, or better. Instructor: Kenkel
