SOC 390-01 - Advanced Studies in Sociology4 credits (Sprig) Dilemmas of Nonviolence in a Violent World. Young people hold a unique position at the intersection of ‘intergenerational transmission’ and ‘generational shifts.’ In other words, they are both recipients and innovators of culture and politics. They are socialized to the ideas and practices of the previous generation through family, education, and media. Yet this transmission of cultural and political heritage takes place under new circumstances that foster innovation; young people decide what to carry forward and what to leave behind. This course examines how the youth mediate the past and the future, bridging two phenomena fundamental to sociology: social reproduction and social change.
Prerequisite: At least one 200-level sociology course with grade S, C, or better, and third-year standing. Note: Plus-2 option available Instructor: Mart
