SOC 390-02 - Advanced Studies in Sociology4 credits (Spring) But some of Us are Brave: Centering Black Women’s Voices. This seminar engages Black feminist theory as a lens for understanding the intersecting constructions of race, gender, and sexuality, with a particular focus on the lived experiences of Black women across the African Diaspora. Through critical readings, discussion, and qualitative research, we will examine the marginalization of Black women’s voices and experiences in society, media, social movements, literature, etc. Guided by the principles of Black Feminist Thought, this course centers storytelling as both a method and a mode of resistance. As a key component of the seminar, students will design and conduct qualitative interviews with Black women, reflecting on the ethical, methodological, and theoretical implications of amplifying marginalized voices.
Prerequisite: At least one 200-level sociology course with grade S, C, or better, and third-year standing. Note: Plus-2 option available Instructor: Crooks-Allen
