The Film and Media Studies concentration will prepare digital native students for the ever-changing media landscape of the 21st century. Grounded in theory, while emphasizing practice along with Grinnell’s core value for social responsibility, the program will push students to discover their own original creative voices making meaning through the generation and critical interrogation of moving images and related forms.

Concentration Requirements: 24 credits as follows


Core Courses (8 credits)


Elective courses (12 credits) as chosen from the following areas:*


*Notes: students must take at least 4 credits from each area. Any class taken as a core course may not count as an elective.

Theory Area


Seminar or Advanced Project (4 credits)*


* Notes: Must be a 300-level course or MAP/individual study equivalent. Any class taken as a seminar or advanced project may not count as elective.

Notes:


  • Students may transfer up to 9 credits of approved off-campus study courses towards the concentration.
  • At least 4 credits must be taken outside of FMS/ART.
