SOC 395-01 - Advanced Special Topic: Child Poverty: Manifestations, Impacts and Challenges for Policy Making.4 credits (Spring) Cross-listed as: PST 395-01 . Families with children are more likely to be poor than childless households in most countries. As a result, many more children than adults live in poverty. Worldwide, many millions live in multidimensional poverty, meaning they lack access to basic needs: adequate shelter, a warm home, and nutritious food. For many, it means working for a living at early ages and having no time or freedom to play with peers or go to school. In countries of the Global North, the most severe manifestations of poverty are rarely seen, but children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to be sick, obese, drop out of school, and engage in deviant behavior.
